LOCATED IN the 1829 Factory Building where Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail demonstrated the telegraph (1838), this exhibit interprets both the science and the men behind "this magnificent machine." A series of mechanical interactives helps visitors understand principles such as early electricity and batteries, electromagnetism, and the inner workings of the telegraph. Exhibitry includes props of period equipment and products, early telegraph components like insulators and wire, and period-style cabinetry. The graphics rely on first-person accounts, images, and interpretive text to tell the story of this seminal moment in telecommunication history.
